Most Zimbabwean builds use the same handful of materials — sand, stone, cement, bricks. Knowing what each one is actually for, and where it goes, makes it much easier to order sensibly and avoid running short on site mid-pour.
Below is a plain-language guide to the aggregates and materials Welver Projects supplies, and what they are used for.
Aggregates
3/4 stones
Washed crushed stone, roughly 19mm in size. The workhorse of concrete mixes — used in foundations, slabs, columns, beams and any structural concrete. Also used in drainage and as a base for surfacing.
River sand
Washed, naturally rounded sand. Used in concrete mixes, mortar, plaster and screeds. Washed river sand is generally preferred for plaster and finishing work because it is clean and consistent.
Pit sand
Pit sand is angular and usually slightly finer than river sand. It grips well in mortar and is commonly used for bricklaying and plaster. It is also used in concrete mixes alongside river sand.
Quarry dust
A fine by-product of crushing stone. Used as a sub-base layer under slabs, driveways and roads, and for compaction where a fine, well-grading material is needed. Quarry dust also appears in some block and paver manufacturing.
Gravel & fill
Coarser than quarry dust. Used for ground stabilisation, roadbeds and building up levels before compaction. Fill material is placed in layers and rolled.
Cement and binders
Cement
The binder in concrete and mortar. A standard bag of cement is 50kg. Cement should be stored dry, off the ground, and used within a few months of delivery. Do not use cement that has hardened into lumps.
Walling materials
Red common bricks
Standard clay bricks, used for general walling. Suitable for most residential and commercial walls where load-bearing requirements are modest.
Load-bearing bricks
Bricks designed and tested for higher compressive loads. Used in structural walls where the brick itself carries significant load — for example in double-storey structures or specific engineering designs.
Cement bricks
Cement-based bricks, usually larger and more uniform than clay bricks. Commonly used for boundary walls, garden walls, and buildings where consistency and speed of construction matter.
Decorative dark rustic bricks
Chosen for appearance rather than pure structure. Used for feature walls, face brickwork, and finishes where the wall itself is part of the design.
Cladding and finishes
Rhinocet
A versatile building material used in decorative finishes and wall cladding. Applied to add texture, colour and durability to walls, entrances and feature panels.
Natural stone & stone cladding
Natural stone, cut or split into cladding pieces. Used to enhance exterior aesthetics and provide a durable, low-maintenance finish on walls, columns, retaining walls and facades.
Ordering sensible quantities
Two rules of thumb that save clients money:
- Order all aggregates for a stage at once. Delivery costs less per cubic metre when you order a full load rather than half-loads on short notice.
- Add 5–10% to your calculated quantities. Waste, spillage and small variations in level always consume more than the drawing suggests. Running short mid-slab costs far more than ordering slightly over.
Delivery and lead times
Within Harare and surrounding areas we typically deliver within 24 to 48 hours of a confirmed order. For out-of-town projects we confirm a delivery schedule upfront so it fits your programme.
